Web Hosting Information - how to choose a web hosting company, moving to a another web hosting provider, what are web hosting services and more

Website Statistics

Included in your web hosting package is a sophisticated website statistics package called Awstats. Awstats is used very widely to provide statistics about the number of visitors to your website and where they come from.

But what do these statistics actually mean? What does it mean when someone says that they are getting '2 Million hits' to their site per month. Is this really such an impressive feat?

My domain has been registered but I can't access CPanel
The domain takes a while to become available after registration. It can take anything between 6 to 48 hours for the DNS entries to propagate.

If you want to access the control panel in the mean time, you can do it through the IP address, as follows:

Username : your cpanel username
Password : your cpanel password

Similarly for FTP, if you want to upload through FTP before the domain has fully propagated, log into the FTP server as with your cpanel username and password

Moving to a new web hosting provider

There are various reasons why you might want to move your website. Your website might get so much traffic that your current hosting provider cannot meet your needs any more. We can all but hope for this reason, rather than the more common one, which is basically that your hosting provider, well... sucks. You might be tired of unscheduled downtime, plagued by missing emails and fed up with unanswered support ticket requests.

Keep these points in mind when you move your website:

Dedicated Hosting and VPS Hosting

Let's just recap on the different types of hosting services that are available:
1. Free web hosting - these are normally sponsored through advertisting. A no-no if you are serious about hosting your website for business purposes

2. Shared hosting - shared hosting is the most common type of hosting available today. This is most commonly used if you are running a small website or are just starting out.

VPS hosting and Dedicated Hosting is the way to go if your website needs are outgrowing your shared hosting.

Cheap Web Hosting - Shared Web Hosting

Lots of people are looking for cheap hosting solutions. It is also true that the price of hosting has decreased over the past few years. It is now more affordable than ever to host your website. One should be careful however, of opting for the very cheapest that you can find. Most often, these providers do overselling. This basically works on almost the same principle as airlines that do overbooking. Because airlines realise that about 10% to 15% of people who book their tickets will actually never make it to the plane, the allow overbooking of tickets of up to 10%.

The trouble comes when EVERYONE decides to pitch up and use their tickets. That is when you get long queues, grumbling passengers and air hostesses that seem to have smiles pasted onto their faces....

Web Hosting Companies - how to choose a web hosting provider

The amount of choice available for selecting a hosting provider these days is staggering. you are presented with almost as many options for hosting plans than you get types of coffee at a Starbucks.

How do you know which are the good, the bad and the ugly?

Web Hosting Review Guide

A Web hosting review guide can help you find the right hosting provider.

If you do a search in Google for 'Web Hosting' or 'Hosting', the first couple of results that come up are surprisingly enough, not those of actual web hosting companies, but rather web hosting review sites.

These sites are an excellent resource to assist you with making a decision regarding which web host to choose for your foray into the world of the Internet.

Webhosting - the right operating system

There are basically two operating systems out there to choose from when you select a webhosting provider - Windows or UNIX/LINUX

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Both have their supporters and detractors too. I have to admit that I am squarely in the LINUX camp.

Web Hosting Plan Features

Here is what you should look for in hosting plan features:

Often hosting plan features are tied into the type of control panel that is provided with the hosting service. Most people take for granted that a control panel should be part of the package, but in smaller countries outside the USA this is often a 'luxury' that is not part of the hosting package!

Finding out whether your hosting server provider offer a control panel to manage your website is the first essenstial feature that you should look for. It is unacceptable to sign up for a hosting package if there is no control panel!
